Who doesn’t love an anti-hero? And surely everyone’s favourite is Wade Wilson aka Deadpool right? And did you know he turned 30 in 2021? In this blog I’m here to talk all things Deadpool so get ready for some fourth wall breaking action from Marvel’s mercenary.
INTRODUCING WADE WINSTON WILSON
Comic book fans first saw Deadpool in the The New Mutants #98 in February 1991. This was the start of Deadpool’s story arc where he was described as a disfigured mercenary whose superhuman regeneration and physical prowess firmly put him in the super villain category.
In the issue, the New Mutants team is investigating a mysterious mercenary named Cable, who has been attacking government installations. Deadpool is introduced as a hired gun sent to stop the New Mutants from interfering with Cable’s plans. He battles the team, but is ultimately defeated by them. This brief appearance laid the groundwork for Deadpool’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe MCU.
THE MERC WITH A MOUTH
Deadpool is a highly skilled mercenary and assassin, with an extensive arsenal of weapons and combat training. He is also known for his regenerative healing factor, which allows him to recover from even the most severe injuries at an accelerated rate.
Often referred to as the “merc with a mouth” because of his constant joking even in the most inappropriate moments and his continual dialogue both in character and whilst breaking the fourth wall** , often making humorous or sarcastic comments about the events of the story or the other characters involved. This brings a humour to the character that is missing from Deadpool’s anti hero contemporaries and makes him a much more likeable ex super-villain.
Despite his violence and occasional lack of morals, Deadpool is often portrayed as having a soft spot for the underdog and a desire to help those in need. He has been a member of various superhero teams, including the X-Men and the Avengers, and has even been known to team up with his frequent foe, Cable. Deadpool is a complex and multifaceted character who has captured the hearts of many comic book fans with his unique blend of humor, action, and heart.
**The fourth wall is a term used in theatre to depict the invisible wall that separates the audience from the actors. The audience can see through this wall but the actors pretend they cannot. Deadpool breaks this by talking directly to the audience about his character.
DEADPOOL APPEARANCES
Following his initial appearance Deadpool showed up in several X-Force comics during 1991 and 92. X-Force was a spin-off of the popular X-Men series, and focused on a more militant and proactive team of mutant heroes, of which Deadpool played a significant role.
Deadpool was initially introduced as a villain, hired by the evil mutant Stryfe to assassinate the members of X-Force. However, he eventually turned on Stryfe and began to work with the team, becoming a reluctant ally. He had a complicated relationship with the other members of X-Force, often clashing with them over his more mercenary tendencies. Despite his sometimes antagonistic relationship with the team, Deadpool proved to be a valuable asset to X-Force, using his combat skills and knowledge of the criminal underworld to help the team achieve their goals.
In 1992 Deadpool made his first TV appearance in the X-men animated series as well as further comic book guest appearances in The Avengers, Daredevil and Heroes for Hire series.
However, we really got to know the Deadpool we love when he got his own mini series, Circle Chase, in 1993. With further volumes following right up to the present day. Deadpools complex character arc as seen our anti-hero evolve from a one-dimensional jokester into a more complex and multifaceted ex-super-villain with a tragic backstory.
In the early issues of his solo series, Deadpool was primarily portrayed as a violent and irreverent mercenary, with a tendency to break the fourth wall and engage in self-referential humor. However, as the series progressed, writers began to delve into Deadpool’s troubled past and explore the reasons behind his erratic behavior. One of the key elements of Deadpool’s character arc has been his struggle to come to terms with his own identity and find a sense of purpose in his life. He has grappled with feelings of guilt and self-loathing, and has often turned to violence and substance abuse as a way of coping with his inner turmoil.
At the same time, Deadpool has also shown a capacity for growth and redemption, as he has forged meaningful relationships with other characters and taken on a more heroic role in the Marvel Universe. He has teamed up with other heroes to fight against common threats, and has even become a member of the X-Men and the Avengers.
Throughout the 2000’s this popular Marvel character featured in numerous spin off and limited series comics before making Deadpool’s first big screen appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. Played by Ryan Reynolds this version of the character was widely criticized by fans for straying too far from the comic book depiction of the character, particularly in its treatment of his unique abilities and personality.
Back on the small screen, Deadpool appeared in TVs Ultimate Spider-Man animated series in 2012 and Marvel Disc Wars: The Avengers in 2014.
By 2016 Marvel were ready to try again on the movie screen and Reynolds reprised the role of Deadpool in a solo film simply titled “Deadpool,” which was a critical and commercial success. The film embraced the character’s irreverent humor and fourth-wall-breaking tendencies, and proved to be a faithful and entertaining adaptation of the source material.
A sequel, “Deadpool 2,” was released in 2018, which continued to expand on the character’s backstory and relationships while introducing new characters and plotlines. Overall, Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool has been widely praised by fans and critics alike, with many considering it to be one of the most faithful and entertaining comic book adaptations in recent memory. And we can not wait for the next installment due for release in 2024.
