With the new Minions film, Minions: The Rise of Gru, released today (01/07/22) we are taking a look back at when we first saw the little yellow henchman and will be discussing all things minions.
And if you don’t want to read the blog but just want to get straight to the Merch follow the link to take a look at our children’s Minions pyjamas.
But Who Are The Minions
In the early films we are shown that the Minions are lovable if slightly incompetent helpers, but we do not know where these strange creatures come from, are they aliens? An experiment gone wrong?. This question is answered in the first Minions spin off movie with the opening sequence showing the evolution from amoeba through to the Minions we know and love today. Suggesting they are just another life form on earths evolutionary train.
Although there a numerous minions shown within the movies, the focus is generally on 3 main characters, Kevin: who generally takes on the role of leader is the taller of the trio, Stuart: with his single eye and center parting and Bob: the more child like of the three Bob is bald with eyes that are different colours. Other minions also get a shout out in the movies including Dave, Carl, Phil and Tim.
The minions first appear in the Despicable me franchise before getting their own spin off self titled movie. It’s in the Minions movie that we find out that the sole purpose of this gang of wanna be henchmen is to find a super villain they can follow and after several attempts that generally did not end well for the villain, the Minions settle on Gru.
Despicable Me
We first meet the Minions in the 2010 Universal Pictures movie centered around the super villain Gru and his little yellow henchmen known as Minions. In this computer animated movie we see Gru trying to steal a shrink ray from rival villain Vector. As part of his dastardly plan he adopts Margo, Edith and Agnes as a ploy to infiltrate Vectors compound. With the girls winning the hearts of the minions and Gru alike will family come before shrinking and stealing the moon?
Despicable Me 2
This 2013 sequel sees Gru switching sides and working as a secret agent for the Anti-Villain League. Working with agent Lucy Wilde he must track down the perpetrator of the theft of a secret laboratory in the Artic.
Gru’s prime suspect is the previously presumed dead El Macho. But in his work to prove his theory he doesn’t notice that his Minions are slowly disappearing. Will he connect the dots and figure it out in time?
Minions
2015 saw the first of the Minions own spin off movie. After the death of there abominable snowman masters, Kevin, Stuart and Bob set out to find a new super villain to follow. After winning a competition they win the right to act as henchman for Scarlet Overkill and support her in her plan to steal Queen Elizabeth II’s crown.
However, in true Minions style all does not go to plan and Kevin, Stuart and Bob find them facing Scarlet Overkill’s wrath. Will everything work out in the end and will they find a new master to follow?
Despicable Me 3
2017 sees the Minions back with Gru and the girls in the third installement of the Despicable Me films. Now married to Lucy and fired from the Anti-Villain League, Gru’s family grows again when he discovers the existence of his long lost twin brother Dru.
Dru desparate to follow in his brothers super villain footsteps he encourages Gru to do one more heist. This results in the brothers teaming up against new enemy, former child actor turned villain, Balthazar Bratt.
What Next for The Minion’s?
Well as already mentioned there is a new spin off Minions movie out today. Here we go back in time again to the 1970’s where we join the Minions with there new master, a young Gru. We follow the Minions as they navigate their new relationship and follow Gru on a quest to join infamous supervillains the Vicious 6. Now this wouldn’t be a Minions movie if all went to plan, and after the interview goes very wrong, Gru and the Minions find themselves running from the very supervillains they wanted to join.
And don’t worry, this isn’t the end. There are also plans for a Despicable Me 4 which is currently scheduled for release in July 2024.
We for one can’t wait to get to the cinema to see the current offering from the Minions, are you going too? And don’t forget you can check out our range of Minions Merchandise here.
